Pine Mountain Settlement School Photograph Collection, 1919-1921 and 1923.

The photographs of this collection were taken or collected by Ethel Marion Wright. She was a teacher at the Pine Mountain Settlement School from about 1919-1921. There are 136 black and white silver gelatin print photographs, one black and white silver gelatin print postcard, one newspaper article from the 1950s about a former student, and one photograph album. Some of the photographs show the students doing daily chores, performing in a play and posing for class group pictures. The photographs of the teachers show them working, engaging in free time activities such as a picnic and shots of individuals. Other subjects of photographs are the school grounds, the areas around the school, and local people in the area. Most of the photographs are from 1919-1921, but two date from 1923. The collection is 0.5 cubic feet.

Pine Mountain Settlement School was founded in 1913 by William Creech Sr. and he donated the land for the school. The school was a boarding school for elementary and middle school children from 1913 until 1930. After 1930, the school admitted high school students. Pine Mountain Settlement School was incorporated by Katherine Pettit and Ethel DeLong in 1913 and operated as a boarding school until 1949. In addition to regular academic subjects, students were involved in traditional music and dance activities, and a labor program that helped run the school and develop useful skills.
